the basics

What are wisdom teeth, and why do they cause trouble?

Most fully-grown adults have 32 permanent teeth — 16 on each jaw. The third molars at the very back are known as wisdom teeth, and they typically erupt between the ages of 16 and 21.

Because they're the last to come in, there's often not enough room left in the jaw. When that happens, wisdom teeth become impacted — partially erupted through the gums, or trapped beneath them entirely.

We recommend removing impacted wisdom teeth even if they're not currently symptomatic — to prevent infection, decay, and bite problems down the road.

Why remove

What happens if you leave them in?

The lack of pain doesn't mean your wisdom teeth are healthy. Here are the four most common problems we see — most of them silent until the damage is done.

Problem 01

Damage to other teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth push against neighbouring molars, eroding enamel and causing severe mouth pain. In serious cases this leads to bite issues.

Problem 02

Jaw damage & cysts

Dental cysts can form around impacted wisdom teeth. Left untreated, they hollow out the jawbone and may damage surrounding nerves.

Problem 03

Inflamed gums & infection

Soft tissue around partially erupted wisdom teeth becomes inflamed and forms infection pockets — a common cause of tooth decay.

Problem 04

Affects teeth alignment

As wisdom teeth push forward, they crowd the rest of your teeth out of alignment. Many patients then need orthodontic correction.

Tip: a panoramic X-ray every 5 years is the easiest way to catch wisdom tooth problems before they become painful or expensive.

The process

Simple, calm, and over before you know it.

A non-surgical extraction is usually reserved for upper wisdom teeth that are not impacted. Surgery is required for teeth that are impacted, partially or fully erupted. Tissue typically heals within one to two weeks.

01

Initial consultation

Your dentist conducts a thorough analysis of your oral health to examine the type of impaction and determine if surgery is required, then walks you through a basic treatment plan in detail.

02

Anaesthesia is administered

For most wisdom tooth extractions, local anaesthesia is used to ensure you do not feel any pain during the surgical procedure. Sedation or general anaesthesia is also available for surgical cases.

03

Wisdom tooth exposed & removed

Once the anaesthesia has fully taken effect, the dentist surgically exposes the impacted tooth and removes it. Time taken depends on the size and position of the tooth.

04

Stitching of gums

The incision used to extract the tooth is stitched up with dissolvable stitches. Pain medication is then prescribed to control any post-surgery discomfort.

Recovery

Back to normal in 3–5 days.

Most patients experience some pain and minor swelling over the next 24–72 hours, then return to work or school within a few days. You'll be provided with up to 5 days of medical leave and prescription pain medication.

Full healing
  • Avoid this
  • Don't drink through a straw — suction can dislodge the healing clot
  • Don't spit forcefully or rinse vigorously in the first 24 hours
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 3–5 days after surgery
  • Skip carbonated and sugary drinks during the first week
  • Don't smoke — it dramatically slows healing and risks dry socket
  • Do this
  • Bite gently on gauze for 30 minutes after surgery to control bleeding
  • Apply an ice pack to the cheek in 5–10 min intervals for the first 18 hours
  • Take prescribed antibiotics and painkillers exactly as directed
  • Brush after meals with a soft toothbrush, avoiding the wound
  • Rinse frequently with antibacterial mouthwash from day two

Watch out for dry socket

A blood clot forms in the empty tooth socket as part of healing. If it dislodges, the underlying bone and nerves become exposed — known as dry socket. If you experience severe pain 2–4 days after surgery, contact us immediately on WhatsApp and we'll see you the same day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Commonly asked questions about wisdom tooth extractions.

How many days of MC will I be issued after a wisdom tooth surgery?

Depending on your dentist, most patients will typically be given 5 days of MC after a wisdom tooth surgery. If multiple teeth are removed in a single sitting, more days will be given if required.

Do I need to remove my wisdom teeth before starting Invisalign or braces treatment?

The removal of wisdom teeth before any orthodontic treatment is highly dependent on the current condition of your teeth and the treatment plan your dentist has laid out for you. Generally, wisdom teeth only need to be removed if they become impacted, cause pain or obstruct the movement of teeth. Patients with fully erupted, well-positioned and healthy wisdom teeth may not need to have them removed — and in some cases the wisdom teeth may even be used as an anchor to help align other teeth during orthodontic treatment.

I'm a full-time NSF looking to have my wisdom teeth removed, where can I have it done?

As a full-time NSF, the surgical removal of wisdom teeth is part of your NSF medical benefits. In essence, the procedure is fully covered by your medical benefits.

Must I remove my wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth should be removed when they are impacted, decayed or causing you pain or discomfort.

How long does a wisdom tooth removal take?

Non-surgical wisdom tooth extraction typically takes about 30 minutes to complete per tooth. Wisdom tooth surgeries take between 30 to 60 minutes per tooth, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

How long will post-surgery pain last?

Post-surgery pain from a wisdom tooth surgery will typically last around 24 to 72 hours. Pain medicine will be prescribed to all patients after their surgery — this medicine should be taken as prescribed by the dentist, and not only after feeling the pain.
