Tooth Extractions in Singapore

In their natural form, your teeth are designed for chewing, biting and maintaining the structure of your jawbone and mouth. It is for this reason that a dentist would do anything to protect, restore and repair a patient’s teeth. Nevertheless, at times it becomes inevitable and your dentist has to extract one or more of your teeth.

Our experienced dentists will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible throughout the extraction procedure. Your dentist will talk to you about the steps you will undergo during the procedure. To make you comfortable during the procedure your dentist may use a local anaesthetic to numb the pain.

In case you feel nervous about tooth extraction make sure you discuss your concerns with your dentist. Your dentist will do everything possible to ensure that you are comfortable before starting the procedure.

Guidelines for Tooth Extraction Patients

Tooth extraction is a procedure that involves the removal of a tooth. It may be necessary for a tooth to be extracted if it has decayed, is severely damaged by disease or is subjected to trauma.

After tooth extraction, your mouth experiences some changes and this is absolutely normal. In case of any concerns or issues, it is always advisable that you bring them to your dentist’s attention. We have compiled some basic guidelines that will be helpful in promoting healing after the extraction process, prevent aggravation of the condition and make your experience more pleasant.

Essential Aftercare Guidelines

Detailed instructions to ensure your recovery is as smooth and comfortable as possible. These guidelines are designed to promote healing and prevent complications.

Anesthetic Care

Numbness will persist for several hours. Be extremely cautious to avoid biting your tongue, cheeks, or lips. Avoid eating any foods that require chewing until the sensation fully returns.

Bleeding Management

Keep the gauze pack in place for at least 30 minutes.

Protecting the Site

Do not rinse forcefully or use straws for 24 hours. Avoid alcohol and smoking, as these significantly increase the risk of a "dry socket" and delayed healing.

Oral Hygiene

Brush other teeth normally. After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water (1/2 tsp salt in 8oz water) after every meal.

Hypertension patients: Consult your dentist before using salt water.

Medication

Take all prescribed anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medicines exactly as directed. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Contact us if the pain persists.

Swelling & Pain

Some swelling is normal. Apply a cold compress (ice pack or cold wet cloth) to the outside of the face in the affected area to minimize discomfort.

Eating & Drinking

Stick to soft, nutritious foods. Avoid hot fluids and alcohol. Chew on the opposite side of the extraction until you feel comfortable resuming normal habits.

Follow-Up Care

If surgical sutures were used, we will schedule a follow-up appointment to have them removed and monitor your healing progress.

FAQs About Tooth Extraction

Here are some of the commonly asked questions about tooth extraction process and recovery.

Is tooth extraction painful?

We use local anesthetics to numb the area completely, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. You may feel some pressure, but the experience is designed to be as comfortable as possible.

How long does the numbness last

The local anesthetic typically lasts for a few hours after the procedure. Be careful not to bite your tongue or cheek while your mouth is still numb.

What is a 'Dry Socket'?

A dry socket occurs when the blood clot in the extraction site is dislodged or fails to form. It can be very painful. Following our aftercare guidelines strictly helps prevent this.

When can I resume normal eating?

You can start taking solid foods the day after extraction or when you feel comfortable. Always chew on the opposite side until the site has healed significantly.
